WIRELESS PRINTING

Release of Liability

Wireless printing is provided for students’ convenience only. Students accept all risks associated with wireless printing such as but not limited to failed print jobs, lost/misplaced printouts, printouts picked up by another person, exposure of personal/private data, etc. HCU may not be held responsible for any problems that may arise from wireless printing.

Printing from a personal computer via the wireless network will incur the regular printing charges as outlined at https://myprint.hbu.edu. Refunds will not be offered for any jobs printed wirelessly.

NOTE:

It is recommended that students go to the MyPrint web site, login, and print from there. The processes below are more complicated, especially for Mac users.

Adding a Wireless Printer to your Mac 10.7.x Lion

*Note: This is completely different than setting up printing with version 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

Before using the following procedures, go to the Gimp-Print web site and download Gutenprint 5.2.8-pre1.dmg. Then install it. This will contain the necessary drivers to connect to the HCU wireless printers (in Step #10). Also, you will need to ensure that you have the latest version of Safari (even if you don't use it for your browser).

1. Open Safari (browser).

2. In the address bar, type in: http://localhost:631

   a. If you encounter an error saying "cupsctl webinterface=yes." To correct this problem, open your Application folder and open Terminal. You will see a strange looking prompt with the blinking cursor. Type exactly that same information (cupsctl webinterface=yes) into the terminal and press Enter.

3. Click on the Administration tab.

4. Click on Add Printer

5. Enter the computer username and password (if prompted)

6. Select "Windows Printer via spoolss". Click continue

7. In the connection box, type in the following: smb://YourHCUNetworkID:YourHCUNetworkIDPassword@myprint/libstu (insert your own personal network ID and password). See the above naming above for other wireless printers on campus.

8. (Optional) Enter the name of the printer, the description, and the location. For the name of the printer type in the same thing you typed in for "printername" above (without spaces). Description and location can be anything you wish.

9. For the make of the printer, select HP. Click continue.

10. For the model, select HP LaserJet 4250 Gutenprint. Click Add Printer. NOTE: Do not click the LaserJet 4250. You must use the Gutenprint option or the printer will print many pages of gibberish.

11. Click Set Default Options.

12. At your first print, you will see a pop-up window asking for an ID and password. Input your HCU portal ID and password and click the "Remember" box.

13. Congratulations! You have successfully installed your printer. This will work only ONE semester as ITS requires a new password each semester. So, at the beginning of the next semester, you need to delete the printer and do this again.

Adding a Wireless Printer to your Mac 10.8.x Mountain Lion

The same basic instructions for 10.7 (Lion) will work. We have noticed several modifications.

  1. Upon downloading and installing Gutenprint, you will likely encounter and error suggesting you cannot download from untrusted sites. This is due to Mountain Lion's new Gateway option available in the Security and Privacy section under the "General" tab. If the screen displays the padlock icon in a locked position, you will need to login with your Mac ID and password. once open, check "download from anywhere." It may be a good idea to reset this this to its default setting for added protection.
  2. In Step #2 above, you may encounter an error saying "cupsctl webinterface=yes." To correct this problem, open your Application folder and open Terminal. You will see a strange looking prompt with the blinking cursor. Type exactly that same information (cupsctl webinterface=yes) into the terminal and press Enter.
