Professor: Dr. Anthony Joseph

As one walks through the main entrance of the Southern History Museum in the Morris Cultural Arts Center there are two paintings that are hanging titled Jean Baptist Fiquet III[1] and Elizabeth Chumar Fiquet (his spouse) circa of the portraits are 1863, in New York by Nicola Marschall (a German artist with deep southern ties.)  The portraits are titled as being that Mr. Fiquet was married to Lydia then to Elizabeth in 1840 and they were initially sisters. They both settled in Marion, Alabama. Researching this topic proved a point that they were mislabeled, but revealed a good representation of migratory patterns of southerners after the Civil War, Civil War records, an interesting (not well known) documented discovery that Nicola Marschall was not the designer to the Confederate Flag. This poster presentation will show historical documents discovered as well as census records, information about the Fiquet Family for approximately 100 years and a brief overview of the Marschall Family.

[1] Jean is French for John; on all records located it is listed as John Baptist Fiquet.
