School of Humanities Oral Presentation Winner!
Hemingway's fiction as literary journalism, Deggs, Michael
School of Humanities
Professor: Dr. Doni Wilson
This presentation will introduce basic ideas surrounding Hemingway's style, structure, and content before relating it to Hemingway's journalist occupation. While scholars often describe his writing as minimal or economical, they often understate the deliberate parallel to journalism. The presentation will outline several major stories and compare their style, content, and structure to pieces of non-fiction
journalism that Hemingway published. Further, the presentation will describe how Hemingway's early life in Illinois, his coming-of-age war experience, and his occupation as journalist formed the basis of how Hemingway crafted fiction from the real world.
