Athletic Training: Home

A guide for students interested in Athletic Training.

Athletic training

Athletic Training is a field with a lot of projected growth and opportunities.  Athletic trainers not only work with sports teams but work with schools, the military, performing arts groups, clinics and hospitals.   You can work anywhere injuries need to be prevented, treated or rehabilitated.  As an allied health professional you will work closely with physicians and other medical professionals.

This libguide is designed to help you in your studies as you work towards becoming a certified athletic trainer.  Here you will find links to our catalog and databases.  In addition you will find lists of some of the many journals and books we have to support your research.  This libguide as well as our library's homepage are good places to start your research.

Licensing and certification

Passing the exam from National Athletic Trainers' Association's Board of Certification is one of the qualifications of a certified athletic trainer.  The certification exam consists of three parts; written, written simulation and practical.  The Board of Certification also oversees certification renewal and continuing education to ensure that certified athletic trainers remain up to date.

Many states require a certified athletic trainer to pass state licensing.  If you plan to practice in Texas you must pass the state licensing exam.  This is a two part exam, it consists of a written and a practical section.  The Advisory Board of Athletic Trainers oversees licensing and continuing education for certified athletic trainers in Texas.
