Here are some clues that the book in hand is scholarly.
1. Examine the author's credentials.
Is s/he affiliated with a university?
Does it state what graduate degrees the author or editor has?
2. The publisher.
Is the publisher a university press like Oxford University Press or University of Texas Press.
Keep in mind not all academic presses are university presses for example Norton, Roman & Littlefield.
3. Bibliography and citations.
An academic author will have bibliographer or citation list.
Are the sources cited from academic publications or publishers?
