Introduction

Temple of Augustus, Pula, Croatia

Welcome.  This LibGuide is intended to help start you on your research.  Here you will find titles and links to materials - reference books, websites, databases, etc - that you might find useful.  It is not intended as a complete listing of resources for the subject, but rather as a starting point for your research.

Basic concepts

Literature:   A primary source would be the work of literature being studied: a novel, play, short story, poem, etc.   Your secondary sources will usually be works of literary criticism by a scholarly author.  Literary criticism is the analysis, evaluation, and interpretation of literature.  It can involve such topics as theme, meaning, symbolism, character analysis, plot, narrative structure, etc.

History: Primary sources are materials created during the time being studied.  They are created by those with direct personal knowledge of the events described.   Some examples of secondary sources are first hand accounts, official records, court records, personal and private papers, charters, treaties, chronicles and inscriptions.  A secondary source relates or describes information gathered from primary sources and elsewhere
