Accessing and Using Library Resources

Library resources are both simple and not so simple to use. There are many resources that are used in different ways and some similar ways. You most likely will be using the following resources

1. HCU OneSearch - This is available on the library home page and searches about 85% of the library's resources (books, E-books, and articles). If you have difficulty accessing the results, look for a pale yellow bar at the top of the screen for a Login button. Depending on how you access things, you may not have logged in yet.

2. Specific Databases - This guide will have subject-specific tabs at the top or you can scroll down to the complete alphabetical listing of library databases. This will be more targeted searching than OneSearch and probably give you fewer results to sort through. One popular one for high school students is JSTOR. The library does not have access to all of JSTOR but they do have a number of their collections. Be aware that it is an archival database and will not have the most current issues. Many will be as recent as perhaps six months and older.

3. Classic Catalog - This is the traditional library catalog. You will need to come to the library to register before checking out books. This site requires a different login but you may not need to login at all depending on your needs. The best use of logins for the catalog is to renew your physical books. If you are interested in the login, you will need to call the Circulation Desk at 281-649-3304. Give them your H-number and they will give you a PIN number for logging in, then click "My Account" to renew or reset your PIN.

4. Using E-books - Be aware that E-books will usually have a Read Online type of option so you do not necessarily need to go to the trouble of downloading! Also, E-books may or may not have multiple, simultaneous user access. If you have access problems, please call the library reference desk at 281-649-3304 and they can help sort out the problem.

5. Self-Guided Tutorials - The librarians have put together a wide range of tutorials to help you at your point of need. These (plus the help center below) are 24/7 access and is like having a librarian on speed dial.

6. Research Paper Help Center - The library has created a new research paper help guide to methodically walk you through the development of your assignment. The optimal word is research. This guide is divided into seven sections and includes sixty-eight (68) brief videos and tutorials designed by librarians to guide your thinking and library searching to help you with a variety of aspects with your research.

NOTE: To borrow from the movie Dead Poets Society, carpe diem -- seize the day. Now is your opportunity to learn how to do research the proper with solid help from the librarians. Don't waste this chance! CEOs and community leaders are saying college graduates can't do research because they only know how to use Google. Don't get caught in that trap! We are here to help. If you need us, call 281-649-3180 or click any of the green chat buttons you will see on the various pages.
