Library basics

This LibGuide is meant to help you get started using the Moody Library resources for music.  We have a variety of materials available including recordings, sheet music, videos, and of course books.

Cafe concert aux Ambassadeurs (cafe concert at the Ambassadeurs cafe)

Edgar Degas (1834-1917)

All library books, recordings and videos can be located in the library catalog the same way you would locate books: by author, title, subject or keyword.  If you are looking for a recording or score of a particular piece of music, I recommend using keyword searching because that will also check for the contents (such a tracks on an album or songs in an songbook).

Books

Reference books are use in the library only.  All other books can check out.  Books on music will call have call numbers that begin with "M".  We also have a large number of Ebooks

We use the Library of Congress system for locating books.  The letters and numbers you see on the spine of books are called “call numbers” and they organize the books on the shelves by subject.  Here’s some basics to help:

M = music (scores)

ML = literature on music

MT = music instruction and study.

Sound recordings and videos

Compact discs are kept at the circulation desk and are checked out to the student for in library use only.

DVDs are kept at the circulation desk and have a check period of 1 week.

VHS tapes are upstairs and can be checked out for 3 weeks, just like books.
