CTJ is published semiannually, in April and November. Its mission, as former Calvin Seminary president John Kromminga wrote in the inaugural issue in 1966, is "to serve the community of Reformed theological scholarship, and through it, the ministers and members of the Reformed churches." Hence, each issue includes a number of scholarly articles, book reviews, and short studies by seminary faculty members and others. A feature of the November issue each year is a bibliography of recent writings about John Calvin and the Calvinist tradition prepared by Meeter Center curator Paul Fields.

JCS publishes constitutional, historical, philosophical, theological, and sociological studies on religion and the body politic in various countries and cultures of the world, including the United States. Each issue features six or more research articles and twenty-five to thirty reviews of significant books in the field, including those published in foreign languages. Periodically, important ecclesiastical documents and government texts of legislation and/or court decisions are also published. Regular features include "Notes on Church-State Affairs", which reports current developments throughout the world, and a list of "Recent Doctoral Dissertations in Church and State."

Scottish Journal of Theology is an international journal of systematic, historical and biblical theology. Since its foundation in 1948, it has become established as one of the world's leading theological journals. Since 1938, The Westminster Theological Journal has published scholarly articles and book reviews.

As the first issue stated, it is "founded upon the conviction that the Holy Scriptures are the word of God, the only infallible rule of faith and of practice, and that the system of belief commonly designated the Reformed Faith is the purest and the most consistent formulation and expression of the system of truth set forth in the Holy Scriptures." (vol. 1, p. 1).

Its editors are appointed by the faculty of Westminster Theological Seminary, and it has the purpose of publishing scholarly work that defends and advances understanding the Bible's teaching and its implications for the larger world.

There is direction in a "for." Theology is for the work of God in the world; it is for the ministry of the church; it is for the gospel. Now, if theology is for ministry, neither theology nor ministry will remain unchanged. Such change we do not fear (well, maybe we fear a little) for it is the change that comes with life and growth.
