Help for Your Personal Research

If the library is the heart and soul of academics, then the library needs to play a vital role in supporting faculty scholarship. Our librarians are more than willing to assist you in your personal research. It would be best if the librarian could meet with the faculty member personally for introductions to each other as well as for understanding the nature of the task. This can include search parameters, preferences including journals, organizations, databases, document delivery style, working with assistants, use of other libraries, as well as establishing preferred methods of communication and reporting timeframes, etc. We can offer the following assistance in the information-gathering process by doing the following:

  1. Find and locate specific items for professors (database and other searching)
  2. Offer personal training or refreshers for professors on the use of databases
  3. Teach professors how to develop search strategies for their research.

If this is sounds appealing, please contact  Dean Riley at 281-649-3182 or Kristin Fance at 281-649-3181.

Special Rules for Faculty Checkouts

  • Faculty may check out books for 3 months at a time, with 2 renewals.
  • Faculty members do not have to pay fines for overdue books, but prompt returns or renewals are encouraged as we want to share our resources with as many that need them. Please keep in mind that history, religion/philosophy, and literature books are widely used by students.
  • We ask that you only check out what you need for your immediate research. Checkouts are not permanent and we do periodic faculty inventories to account for books. Also, we are trying to encourage our students to do better research and writing and they need good materials to do that.

Borrowing Books and Articles from Other Libraries

Interlibrary Loan --An HCU student, faculty or staff member can request an Interlibrary Loan (ILL) for a book or article that Moody Library does not own by filling out an Interlibrary Loan Request Form and giving it to a librarian or using one of the online forms below. The Interlibrary Loan Librarian will try to obtain the material from the nearest free or inexpensive source after searching a nationwide network.  Items will be shipped to Moody library.  Every effort is made to obtain the materials quickly and at the least possible expense, but we cannot guarantee a speedy arrival.  Moody Library only borrows books and articles; no CDs, DVDs, or other non-book materials will be requested.  The patron will be notified by email when the item arrives.  Please complete your use of the borrowed materials quickly and return them to the Interlibrary Loan department at HCU.  Questions about Interlibrary Loan should be directed to the Interlibrary Loan Librarian at 281-649-3181 or ill@hc.edu.

TexShare Cards -- The TexShare card program is an agreement among several libraries which allows users of TexShare libraries to directly borrow from other TexShare libraries.  Using a TexShare card HCU faculty, staff and currently enrolled students can borrow books in person from participating libraries.  The number of books that can be borrowed is limited by the policies of the TexShare libraries.  A TexShare card can be obtained at the Reference Desk or the Circulation Desk along with a list of the local libraries that participate in the TexShare program.  Rice University does not participate in the TexShare card program. TexShare members are everywhere in Texas. See the map to find a location nearest to you.
