Civil War and Reconstruction

This visually stunning atlas presents a plethora of information about the War Between the States and America in the mid-19th century. The book is divided into five chronological sections, one for each year of the war. Each section begins with an overview of the year: "1861: The Coming of War" includes text and maps delineating westward expansion, the spread of slavery, political maneuverings such as the Compromise of 1850, immigration data, population statistics, railroad maps, the election of 1860, secession, and the early battles. For each year, military, political, and social issues are discussed. Topics are presented over two to three pages with an introductory essay and captioned reproductions, archival photographs, and colorful, detailed maps that are easy to read. Battlefield maps use distinctive colors and precise markings, explained in the legend at the beginning of the book. For some of the battles, locations and positions are amplified with additional maps. A detailed chronology and glossary round out the volume.

Arranged chronologically, this atlas combines period photographs and illustrations, rare period maps and modern cartography, with just enough narrative to explain the two-page spread devoted to each subject (the majority being about particular battles or campaigns). Each spread's short essay numbers its facts so as to key them to their placement on the accompanying map, a great boon to readers' geographic understanding. The 80-some period maps are excellent examples of Civil War cartography and the contemporary view of the conflict. Arranged into chapters, each covering one year of the war, and opening with a time line for the period, the text also features numerous sidebars throughout, offering micro-timelines, biographies, and images showing the human side of the war.

In this landmark work, noted historical political cartographer Martis closely examines the organization, proceedings, and actions of the Confederate Congress. The atlas concentrates on the civilian political geography of the South as seen through the Provisional Congress of 1861 and the First and Second Permanent Congresses (1862-65). Organized into six chapters and five appendixes, the volume contains 45 full-page maps (all but two in color) along with 48 statistical tables that provide details and analysis on congressional districts, election patterns, and significant regional differences in roll-call voting behavior. A variety of topics--e.g., the significant role that Union occupation had on the laws and politics established by the Confederate government, the congressional history of the 13 states officially admitted to the Confederacy, and major issues confronting the Confederate Congress (including foreign affairs, military operations, and conscription)--are thoroughly presented in the atlas.

Reprint of the Atlas to Accompany the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies (1891-1895). Contains over 800 maps and plans most of which relate to military operations in the field.
