This guides assembles all library policies in one place.

Student Behavior Expectations in the Library

Code of Conduct Regarding Noise

In a community environment, the right to participate in or enjoy a particular activity ends when that activity or by-product infringes on the rights of others, particularly their right to sleep, study, or spend time in a peaceful setting. It is expected that students be aware of how their actions may be affecting others and maintain reasonable noise levels 24 hours a day (2017-2018 Student Handbook, p.26).

Given this expectation, noise expectations on the second floor are different from that of the first floor. Students on the second floor are expected to maintain normal or quieter conversations in the talking area. We ask students to be courteous of those studying around you or your group and keep any conversation or device use at reasonable volumes levels to avoid disturbing others nearby.

Be aware that the noise level in Java City is not easily controllable. Students may prefer to sit in areas farther away.

Library Patron Behavior Policy

Houston Christian University is dedicated to ensuring an environment for library patrons that is conducive to study, research and scholarly collaboration. We strive to create an atmosphere that is safe, welcoming and respectful for everyone and that allows for both individual and collaborative work. If you experience or witness discrimination or other inappropriate behavior in the library, please approach a library staff member. If you are aware of a sexual harassment incident, you are encouraged to complete an incident reporting form. This can also be submitted anonymously: https://secure.ethicspoint.com/domain/media/en/gui/55288/index.html.

Illegal Behavior

Houston Christian University is dedicated to ensuring an environment for library patrons that is conducive to study, research Violation of Federal or Texas law or local municipal ordinances and Houston Christian University codes of conduct and the HCU student handbook are absolutely prohibited, including, but not limited to: verbal abuse, use of obscenities, fighting and other forms of disorderly conduct or harassment of any kind, property damage or destruction, theft, and public indecency.

Right to Refuse Service

Houston Christian University is dedicated to ensuring an environment for library patrons that is conducive to study and research. Moody LIbrary reserves the right to refuse services to any patron who behaves irresponsibly and is disrupting the use of the facilities or disrespecting other patrons or any library employees: Any library employee can enforce the right to refuse service when a patron is behaving inappropriately. In extreme cases, Houston Christian University Police Department will be called to mediate and will escort said patron(s) from the building. Inappropriate behavior includes, but is not limited to the following:

  • Disruptive or uncivil behavior, including offensive language
  • Disruptive, unreasonable demands for service
  • Erratic or threatening behavior
  • Damaging university property or equipment

Quiet Wing

The Quiet Wing is reserved for those seeking individual study. For this reason, students are not encouraged to sit in groups in the Quiet Wing as it promotes conversation. Cell phones should be silenced. Cell phone calls and conversations must be used in the talking section. For disruptions, students are encouraged to text 518-633-4687 (HCU Answers) to inform the staff and faculty of problems and the matter will be handled appropriately.
