Calhoun, Dominick

Professor: Dr. Kylee J. Short

The purpose of this abstract is to provide the reader with information regarding the education and protection being provided to college athletes and whether enough is being done to protect them. The audience this research paper is being directed at should be college coaches, equipment managers, trainers, and athletes. The research is focused at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) level of Division 1 softball. The research goes into greater depth within college softball. One university was selected and softball players from that university were selected to fill out a survey. The survey consisted of several questions relating to concussions, education before and after said concussion, safety equipment used, what treatment and procedures were provided, and how the athlete felt they were treated. One of the main points being studied is if these young women are properly being educated. If these young women are not being educated properly than how can they protect themselves from the dangers in the day to day contact of the game? If no one looks out for these young women now, then how will they live their lives down the road if there are any future problems?
